Caffeine chart

How much caffeine is in each tea?

Approximate milligram ranges per typical serving, based on commonly published values.

Caffeine in tea varies more by how you brew than by which tea you pick: leaf quantity, water temperature, and steep time can move a cup by a factor of two. The ranges below are per typical serving (about 250 ml for steeped teas, one bowl for matcha) and assume a standard 2–3 minute steep.

Two rules of thumb: shading raises caffeine (matcha and gyokuro lead the chart because of it), and roasting or aging lowers it (hojicha, most dark teas). Because matcha is consumed as a suspension rather than an infusion, you ingest the full leaf dose.

high caffeine

medium caffeine

low caffeine

These are estimates for comparison, not laboratory measurements. Decaffeinated, cold-brewed, or heavily re-steeped tea will land outside these ranges. See our sources & methodology page for how values are derived.
