Sensory Dissection

Flavor

Lao Ban Zhang

BitterHoneyedFloralBold

Lao Ban Zhang is the most famous — and most counterfeited — village in pu-erh, on Bulang mountain. Its sheng is powerful: an intense bitterness that resolves into deep, lingering returning sweetness, thick body, and a pungent orchid-and-honey aroma. The tea is demanding when young and built for decades of aging. Expect high prices and buy only from trusted sources, as genuine Ban Zhang leaf is extremely limited.

Mangzhi

BoldHoneyedFruityMineralWoody

Mangzhi is one of the six ancient tea mountains, just east of Yibang, and its sheng teas carry a bolder personality than its neighbor. The cup opens with a strong, slightly bitter front that converts quickly into honeyed sweetness — the classic 'bitterness yields to sweetness' profile collectors prize. Stone-fruit and mineral notes build over infusions, and aged Mangzhi develops deep woody and medicinal depth.
